How would you change the story of "To Kill a Mockingbird" if it were set in a different time and country.
What would you have to alter in the plot?  How would the characters be different?

If it was in present time in Bulgaria Tom Robinson would be gypsy.
If it was before 1989 Aticus Finch would be a communist in  and he would fight for the wrongfully accused proletarian  Tom Robinson . Of course Ewells would be exploiter capitalists passing Americans or West Germans.
The names would be Aticus--Todor, Tom - Vladimir /there is always hero named Vladimir/, Ewells can keep their names, Boo Radley would be Peshko Strashkov he would be old partisan who fought against the fascists. Scout would be member of the Comsomol /Young Communist League/....

I love it Sonya!!

If it were set in 18th century Tonga, I'd change Atticus's name to Kanok'Ahu Nuku and he would be a modest yam plantation owner with a big machete that sits in the corner of his hut unused.  He would still have two children, but the visiting little boy Dill, would be a large green, curious iguana who seems fascinated by the children and one lonely and abandoned fruit bat named Boo.
A British missionary named Tom Robinson comes to the Island meaning no harm, but it soon becomes apparent that the peoples of Tonga do not trust him.  Kanok'Ahu tries to hide Tom Robinson in the yam fields until he can convince the chieftan that the foreigner is only doing God's work, when Tom "accidently" stumbles and falls into a boiling cauldron.

I still have a lot of details to sort out.

I saw that movie! In the end Lenin comes in and pins a medal on Todor and Peshko is reintegrated into the flock by becoming a Comsomol Youth Leader!! Apostol Karamitev should have won an acting award for his Todor! (wink!)
